All roads lead north at this time of year!

With just seven short weeks left before Christmas is upon us, I thought that now might be a good time to extol the virtues of you and your kids going to visit Santa rather than him always having to visit you! As we all know, Santa lives in the North Pole but what some people don’t realise is that because the lines of longitude converge, the nearer they get to the pole, the greater the area on the map that the North Pole represents. Part of that area can be found in the lands that lie above the Arctic Circle in the northern European country of Finland — an area known locally as Lapland. Although there is no regular air service to northern Finland from Ireland, that all changes around this time of year when enterprising Irish tour operators such as Sunway charter several aircraft to take legions of Santa’s fans up to meet with the great man and get a feel for his homeland which is exactly as you would imagine it to be — all snow-laden pine trees; huskies, reindeers, sleds and elf’s.

Although it is a long haul, you can do the trip in one day but to experience all that Lapland has to offer, I would thoroughly recommend that you try and stretch to one of the two-night packages as they represent a once-in-a-lifetime experience both for adult and child and will never be forgotten. Indeed, if you closely scrutinise the accompanying image, you’ll get just a flavour of what you can expect to enjoy during your time at the North Pole during one of those two-day visits. A truly magical experience and who knows, you might even get to see the Northern Lights as well at no additional charge!
